KIRKOS IS HOLDING A 10TH ANNIVERSARY MINI‑FESTIVAL IN UNIT 44 — FROM JULY 28TH TO 31ST
We’d love to see you for a four-day celebration of the first ten years of Kirkos. Running July 28th through 31st, it will be an off-beat, musically adventurous way to spend the bank holiday weekend. Everything is free (though booking is recommended) and centres on our informal venue Unit 44 on Prussia Street, between Stoneybatter and Cabra. Events include:

— an installation performance marking the recent launch of Susan Geaney’s release Tape Melt

— the first Dublin screening of Eimear Walshe’s Land Cruiser

— Dublin’s first, and possibly last, “Fluxus Open Mic” (all welcome to participate, if you dare)

— a trip to nearby Phoenix Park for outdoor performances of music by Robert Coleman and Karen Power

— and three concerts performed by Kirkos. These concerts include performances of newly commissioned work from some of our dearest collaborators: Robbie Blake, Éna Brennan and Jonathan Nangle.


    SOME HIGHLIGHTS IN MORE DETAIL:

    Tape Melt (Susan Geaney / Kirkos), inspired by the overwhelming sound of a VHS tape coming under pressure in a VCR player and capturing an array of mixed emotions and the trepidation of the unknown experienced over the last few years // Zipper Music by Judith Shatin explores the endless sonic possibilities of a quartet of jacket zippers // Éna Brennan’s Ode to Laura Palmer is a queasy, Twin Peaksy piece for video and ensemble // Eimear Walshe’s film Land Cruiser depicts a car journey through the housing market, looking for somewhere, anywhere to have sex // Coming Together, from 1973, is a minimalist masterpiece pregnant with the tension of a letter written by a prisoner in Attica, USA, in the days before the eruption of the famous prison mutiny there. // The visually sumptuous occult rituals of An Gléacht, assembled by Jennifer Walshe from the scenario left by her reclusive uncle Caoimhín Breathnach on his death, will be accompanied by a new improvised score by Kirkos. // Robbie Blake’s new commission arose out of interviews with the ensemble about what it means to be a musician.
